GEORGE BARNES WITH CONNIE FRANCIS, "LIPSTICK ON YOUR COLLAR"

George comes in around :58 with a Burton-like solo. I would guess this is the kind of guitar break Frank Zappa meant when he referred disparagingly to "clean teen" guitar playing. Perhaps so, but if I could play like this off the top of my head, I wouldn't care what Frank Zappa said about it.

  1. I've been listening to a LOT of George Barnes lately.... Three Suns, Barnes & Kress... such a gift for spontaneous craft. Tony Bennett with Barnes and Braff Quartet Rogers & Hart Songbook is a long time fave... dva

  2. I'm with you-- Barnes is one of the most overlooked
20th century guitarists. At some point I need to post some of his Standard Transcription stuff-- Jim Stephanson turned me on to those recordings, and they really affected me.

  3. hi...i'm george's daughter, alexandra, and it's so cool to find you guys saying such wonderful things about dad's playing. if he were here, he'd say you were both clearly men of impeccable taste!

i've just produced a CD for a new LA-based indie label in which i'm partnered called THE ART OF SOUND -- it's the BACH FUGUE IN G MINOR: THE SESSION by George Barnes & The Jazz Renaissance Quintet. dad arranged the piece for his early 1960's quintet with whom he recorded MOVIN' EASY for mercury. he'd wanted to do an entire album of classical jazz, but the short-sighted label execs deemed it "too esoteric," so the one track dad recorded was limited to one over-played 1962 acetate -- and a 1972 acetate of outtakes from the session engineered by (now iconic producer) phil ramone. the recordings have been digitally remixed and remastered, and the CD releases on september 17...can hardly wait to hear what you and the rest of his fans have to say about this unique recording...

i'm also currently developing and producing a comprehensive transmedia property, THE GEORGE BARNES LEGACY COLLECTION, as an entertainment package and a music curriculum...more on that soon...

    cheers!
